Top Neo-Expressionism Artists
What is Neo-Expressionism?
Something that I am passionate about and would like to look into more in the near future is an art style called Neo-expressionism, which is characterized as emotive subject matter by using intense colors, dramatic forms. I've always wanted to really express myself with my own thoughts and creavity and have been throughout my lifetime but at the same time I would like to futher look into the topic. There are many ways that neo-expressionism can be made and there are artist who have done so already and I have looked into five artists that I thought were very interesting and unique in their own style.
1.) "727", 1996
Art by Takashi Murakami
I really like this art that was created by Takashi Murakami because it is very unique, amazing, and facinating style that he created with using the culture of urban japanese and his own expressions. This art was one of the first art that Takashi has created and was displayed at his first ever solo gallery in Tokyo. I enjoy this art piece because of the self expression it has from the artist using his own style on his artwork.
2.) "The Boy and the Dog in a Johnnypump", 1982
Art by Jean-Micheal
This art piece was made by Jean-Micheal who is an african-american artist that was part of the art movement dealing with racism, classism, etc. I really like this art piece because it has a meaning to which the art depics a young boy and dog hanging around fire hydrate. With this, it symbolizes the urban enviroment of new york city, where the artist lived, of the themes of resistance, oppression, and survival in the city's harsh enviroment. In which I really like the use of story telling and symbolism that is used to express real world issues towards the audience.
3.) "New Toucans", 2024
Art by Hunt Slonem
This art piece was created by an American painter Hunt Slonem. The reason I choose this art piece was because of how incredibly colorful it is and how expressive it is as well from the artist. The paintings that the artist creates is a way to express his own feelings and is a way for him to meditate, in which is something I would like to follow as well.
4.) "Vegetales II", 1992
Art by Aranaldo Roche Rabell
This artist name Aranaldo Roche Rabell uses neo-expressionism to showcase any tense between two countries or personal connections like mental illness. This artwork is an example of that expressive tone to which the art displays very vibrant and dark colors which expresses the height of abilities that the artist has and grappling any existential questions about identity as well. This inspires me to really follow this style for my own and to look into futher of how I feel towards reality and express myself on a canvas.
5.) "Deux saxos chantent pour les oiseaux (Two Saxophones sing for the Birds)", 2006
Art by Robert Combas
Robert Combas is a french painter who was part of a movement called the Figuration Libre movement in which they were encountering against to conceptual and minimalist art. Robert creates hectic narratives of war, crime, transgression, and celebrations which in short makes up the constant flux of modern life. The reason this artist captured my interest was because of the style that he has in all of his work and it is very unique and different than the other artists. The art shown above is my favorite because it is really intriguing, captive, and surreal and I think it depics the culture of african americans in jazz and the music industry, which is really interesting.
