It is made with fresh ingredients such as chicken and ham as well as cheese and breading and topped with a delictable cheese sauce which further enhances the flavor. This Cordon Bleu will simply melt in your mouth and you and your family will be very satisfied. It will become an instant family classic! You can have this dish with potatoes or any variety of vegetables to have a great, very variable meal that is good for the whole family.

Chicken Cordon Bleu originally came from a dish called veal kiev, which came about in Paris, France around the 1840s. The dish called for veal covered in breadcrumbs and fried, and was later adapted in Moscow where they swapped veal for chicken.

Ingredients

Servings: 6-8 people

  • 4 Chicken Breasts
  • 8 Slices of Ham
  • 8 Slices of Swiss Cheese
  • 1 cup Bread Crumbs
  • 1 TBSP Dijon Mustard
  • 2 TBSP Butter
  • 1 TSP Garlic Powder
  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan

Instructions

Preparation time: 15 minutes

  1. Use a sharp knife to cut chicken breast in half horizontally to create two separate halves. Place slices between two pieces of plastic and pound the chicken with a mallet and pound them into thin, even pieces, without tearing the meat.
  2. Top with a slice of ham and a slice of swiss cheese. Roll up the combination into a bundle and wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Wrap the bundle up tightly and twist the excess plastic on the ends into a tootsie roll-like shape. Refrigerate the wrapped chicken bundles for about 30 minutes.
  3. When you take the bundles out of the fridge, dip the chicken into a bowl of melted butter and then press breadcrumbs into the bundle. Transfer to a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake in the center oven at 350 degrees for about 20-25 minutes, or when the internal temperature of the bundle is 160 degrees.
  4. While the bundles are cooking, melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour for about 1-2 minutes and slowly stir in milk and add garlic powder, whisking constantly over medium heat until it comes to a simmer. Let thicken for about 5 minutes, remove from heat and stir in mustard and parmesan until well combined and the cheese has melted.
  5. When the chicken is cooked, remove from the oven and served drizzled with the sauce. You're done!
