Salto de Castro, a small forgotten Spanish village, nestled along the Portuguese border, on the hillside along the Duero River. This once-thriving village built in the 1940's by the Iberdrola Electric Company to provide homes for the workers, architects, and engineers who constructed the nearby dam. As jobs started to dwindle, so did the occupants when in 1989 that last of the inhabitants left. Over the past 30 years the stone facades, terra cotta roofs, windows, walls, doors, and all ability for habitation has fallen into disrepair.
Ruins with a Vision on the Future
For years, Salto de Castro stood as a ghost town, its buildings whispering stories of a bygone era. Originally built for workers of a hydroelectric dam, the village was left deserted when industry moved on. But where others saw decay, a man with a vision and his friend; always ready for a challenge, saw potential. Their mission? To fuse rugged restoration with a rock-and-roll spirit, transforming Salto de Castro into a hub of culture, creativity, and community.
